[WPXperVideo id=243 ]you hello and welcome back span TV okay today we’re going to talk about quite a worthy subject so you’re going to hear a lot of talking in this video on the friend knot on graphics this week and we’re going to talk about the btrfs file system that’s cropping up on more and more Synology nice unit now there’s a lot of advantages to this file system it isn’t wholly superior to ext4 and later on we’ll be doing a comparison at one point comparing these two file systems and giving you some understanding about whether you should spend the extra to get some of the new nas’s with btrfs or save your money and go for some of the older net is still do etx for ext4 and give you an understanding about whether you need to go for those but that’s a video for another day today we want to talk a little bit about btrfs and what it does and what it’s about now btrfs protects your data in ways that ext4 just it does but it does it in a less efficient manner and when you’re dealing with large-scale data storage it’s large files or multiple bytes and businesses and indeed home users require a solution that prevents data corruption of data corruption is a big deal when it comes when you’re sending files back and forth it’s very easy be an unstable internet connection could be an inconsistency in the drives or the file system itself that can cause a data corruption and you want to make sure that your data is as safe as possible and being as integral as possible now when when providing a flexible backup solution you have to bear in mind of this big line between efficiency and getting the job done right it will be very straightforward to just remove all integrity checks or data and snapshots and everything and the system in the background making those calculations and you would see a huge increase in terms of data transmission but the risk there is if something goes wrong or some of those files are corrupted they are then lost near permanently you might be able to retrieve them with data you know a data software but ultimately you want to have a good solid background happening there with your net to make sure all of those checks happen and that’s where btrfs really does take the lead over a lot of its contemporary in file systems and why Synology have chosen it and now I will be doing another video hopefully that QNAP ZFS file system with option they’re using and some of their large gallon asses and it’s another relatively recent decision the same analogy I’m making the jump to btrfs and you’re going to be seeing that in more and more then there’s systems now btrfs is a modern file system it’s a Linux based that was developed to buy multiple parties then it’s now supported by its internal in a selected nationality unit I think it’s more you could see that they do not a few units to see how it floats and maybe they’ll spread it across the entire range at a later date it was it originally designed to address obstacles often encountered in enterprise storage volumes it wasn’t only something for big big unit such em and these problems such as fault tolerance and fault management and data protection in general you know there are lots of notable benefits of btrfs file system particularly these little two Dianetics where efficiency and transmission output is very very important now a lot of this is done using metadata now metadata for those aren’t where are these little little files that happen in the background at the accompaniment the them the you could say they are the anticipate a are the little the description if you or they keep things moving they’re the little you could see them as little notepad dogs if you wallet just tell the system very quickly about whole pieces of data metadata is available in many many forms one of my videos previously i was talking about cody versus plex and her in that case metadata is harvested to get those thumbnails in all of those images and all that information in the background descriptions now in any storage data in any storage system keeping metadata intact is critical and it includes as it includes important information such as folder structures file names access permissions and the location of each file and btrfs stores two copies of metadata on any volume allowing for data recovery if the hard drive is damaged or suffers from bad sectors so it’s another level of checks of that meta data now another advantage of btrfs is the automate automatic corruption detection and repair that happened in the background it’s beautifully done and traditional storage systems might experience errors that go completely unnoticed so there could be an error they’re just you know you don’t even know it’s happened and then later on you’re building foundations on that corruption and this can result in corrupt data being provided to applications with no warning or error messages because you’re just unaware in order to avoid these types of errors btrfs provides check sums and data and metadata and creates those two copies as mentioned of metadata and then verifies the check sums during each read process so this is a constant operation not sequential not once a day not nothing is nothing like that it is done every time it’s a read process if the file system discovers a mismatch the metadata will be repaired automatically and the corrupted files will be reported and logged and that’s when you’ll hear about it but generally all of the repairs are done without you having to action them so these corruptions is it this isn’t a corruption like a file missing this is a intrinsic file problem which these two copies are then compared against in the destination and the send to make sure those repairs are done and another advantage of btrfs is this improved snapshot and data protection and now the BT are a file system introduced it introduces a powerful snapshot feature allowing to create you letting you to create a point in time copy of an entire shared folder so you can just go snapshot that’s not uncommon snapshot technology has been around a while um but this is done in a much faster way with less system resources and space being used up I’ll get to that a bit that way if human error result in a loss or corrupt database and you can quickly restore the data back to a previous time that the snapshot was catching the once again snapshot technology isn’t new but it’s the fact that btrfs does it in a faster way and using less system resources and it’s done in the background and most importantly with less space being used a lot of systems reserved up to ten or twenty percent of its space utilized for just snapshot technology Apple times you another classic dessert example when you reserve abortion just for Apple snapshots now taking a snapshot only consume a very small amount of additional storage storage space as mentioned while exerting little impact on system performance and that’s thanks to the btrfs btrfs copy-on-write architecture so the copies are being made as you right through it does this in the background and straight away you’ve always got beautiful snapshots and beautiful backups being done all the time a frequent schedule backup system automatically creating point in time copies of data every five minutes and gives you the ability to do that up to every five minutes and without affecting performance and guaranteeing a granular data backup recovery so not a single image you have maybe on a remote location and of course I still advise you to have a backup in another location always make sure you’ve got both redundancy and backup covered but this gives you the ability to have constant backups or an image is being created in the background without you noticing and definitely a huge advantage alongside that you’ve got a completely customizable retention policy you can retain up to 256 hourly daily or weekly recovery points according to your individual needs you have a perfect you know control of this snapshot technology and how these little mini backups are being made smart retention options automatically delete unneeded versions so you can set it into automated mode and just pick the time scale it will do the rest of course instantaneous snapshots are available thanks to btrfs being so quick and it’s instant and the backing up of data is done without little worrying about files being modified or deleted because you’ve got multiple copies being done sequentially and again that’s something very unfamiliar to you Apple Time Machine users but of course self service recovery something they’re touting as well that you can review these earlier versions and restore them to a previous version using say file station or Windows File Explorer so it gives you the ability to really go down on a deep level on these snapshots and again your Apple Time Machine users are very familiar with that so if you’re a Mac user and you’re looking for a way to bolster your backing up not just relying on Apple Time Machine giving you image of the data on your machine to keep those backups but also the ability to have a mass and sonorities are always very famously very good with Mac users to create a wonderful snapshot system keeping you covered as beautifully as possible of course there are additional benefits the btrfs another one being the fact that is an official an efficient cloud station system now if you’ve got multiple Synology unit and your gives you the ability don’t look when you send and backup files between them your host system typically needs to create another copy image for sending that data across now that’s done with traditional ext4 volumes this btrfs doesn’t require the doubling of storage space to create those file versions and history data and you can retain historical versions of files when using cloud station without worrying about using all of that storage space and that’s because of that metadata that’s transferred between them it means that you don’t have if you’re sending 4 gig from here to there you don’t have to create another 40 barebone using 8 gig outpour the transfer which does speed things up you know monumentally there’s other things such as quotas for shared folders thereby giving you a much larger ability to have shared folders the data consistency of time backup we’ve already covered there earlier on and clone entire shared folders is give you the ability to create very quick and fast copies of shared folders and is borderline instantaneous we are talking seconds to create those copies of those folders for sharing with other people and to create and test folders and for running you know different understanding for databases and websites just to tinker around try something new and not worry about ruining the original version now if you’ve got any more questions about btrfs and we will be covering a lot of things in our comparison a later date
